Kevin’s career journey began with his first job as a cart attendant at a local course where he grew up in southern California. With a love of golf already well established, a job at the local course was a great match. It came with the flexibility to work around his high school schedule and most importantly, free golf. During weekend shifts, Kevin would see the headlights of mowers and carts in the darkness of the early morning hours, which sparked his interest in the maintenance side of the golf course. Curious to learn more, Kevin enrolled in a sports turf management course at a local community college. His love of sports turf and the science behind successfully maintaining it was ignited, with special thanks to his professor, Brian Scott, who he is still in touch with today. Through his schooling at Mt. San Antonio College, Kevin continued to test his knowledge by participating in three Sports Turf Managers Association (STMA) student challenge competitions with his school’s turf team and took advantage of opportunities to volunteer with the maintenance staff at Spyglass Hill Golf Course for the AT&T Pro-Am in Pebble Beach, California.
In 2010, Kevin landed his first job in golf course maintenance as a greenkeeper and spray technician at Brookside Golf Course in Pasadena, California. He grew tremendously in his first year and became the interim assistant superintendent. Kevin then took an opportunity as an assistant-in-training at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale, California, to continue to develop his skills and prepare for the next step in his career. Kevin became the assistant superintendent at Arrowhead Country Club in San Bernardino, California, in 2013. With a maintenance staff of six and tight budget constraints, Kevin faced multiple challenges head-on.
Kevin accepted a position at Spyglass Hill Golf Course the following year and moved to the Monterey Peninsula with his high school sweetheart. During his tenure at Spyglass Hill Golf Course, Kevin gained beneficial experience, especially with construction projects and PGA Tour tournament preparations. He helped lead volunteers for the AT&T Pro-Am, the same tournament that introduced him to the Pebble Beach Company years before. Kevin continued to develop his skills and management style as an assistant superintendent at Tehama Golf Club in Carmel, California, and at TPC Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada. Each step along his career path has brought many successes and challenges that have helped him prepare for his current role as an assistant superintendent at Cypress Point Club.
Among the many valuable moments Kevin has had at Cypress Point Club so far, he has gained a breadth of experience in golf course restoration, tree transplanting, and numerous construction projects. He has expanded his management skills beyond the regular maintenance staff with the addition of an internship program where he can share his knowledge with up-and-coming golf course maintenance professionals. The opportunity at Cypress Point Club has also reinforced the importance of transparent and supportive connections with club leadership and members to maintain an exceptional club experience. Kevin's passion for the game of golf and leading a team with a common goal of high standards, quality playing conditions, and a positive workplace culture is at the forefront of his career.
